Rice straws contain two main ingredients: Rice flour and tapioca starch. All ingredients are 100% raw and natural without any chemicals. Rice is first cleaned, steamed at a high temperature, and blended with the tapioca starch. Using rice flour is beneficial because it is gluten-free and contains Vitamin B and dietary fiber. Tapioca starch is extracted from the cassava root, a tuber native to South America, and helps form the sturdiness of the straw.
Rice straws could be more eco-friendly than paper and metal straws because they are made from organic materials and are safe to eat. Consumers don’t have to worry about digesting harmful chemicals. Rice straws don’t get soggy easily. They can maintain their shape for three to four hours in cold drinks and thirty to sixty minutes in hot beverages. They also don’t affect the taste of drinks. Moreover, rice straws have the advantage of being completely harmless to the environment, while retaining their durability when immersed water. 

Vinastraws, Equo, Straw the Line NZ, Smaart Eats and NLYTech Biotech are some of the key players offering edible rice straws. NLYTech Biotech is capable of producing 2.4 million rice straws from its new manufacturing plant in Malaysia. Yeonjigonji is one of the key suppliers of rice straws to small cafes, and has signed contracts with major department stores, hypermarkets and hotels in South Korea. In September 2020, Smaart Eats introduced edible Smaart Rice Straws in the Indian market.
