Zika Virus is a vector borne pathogen belonging to the family Flaviviridae transmitted through Aedes species mosquito which bite during the day time. The infection can also be transmitted from infected person via sexual contact, infected pregnant women can trasmit the disease to womb or new born baby, lactating mother can transmit to the infants etc. When a pregant women gets infected with zika virus, it easily enters the placenta and infects the womb and affect the central neverous system causing congentinal zika syndrome. Zika virus can also increase the incidence of Guillain-Barré syndrome, neuropathy and myelitis in adults and children. 

As of now, no vaccine has been developed to provide protection againts zika virus. The preventative measures include protection agianst the mosquito bites, practicing safe sex in the epidemic regions etc. Zika virus can be detected in laboratory testing using blood and urine samples. In the past global outbreak between 2016-2017, many companies have developed test kits specific for detecting zika virus. FDA has approved many testing instruments and kits in the years 2018, and 2019.

Zika virus has become a neglected disease yet emerging in several regions of the world. According to WHO, zika virus has been spreading all across the world, and as of now 92 countries have reported the outbreak. As per the WHO established guidelines, the zika virus can be detected in a laboratory setting by using various modalities such as NAAT (neuclic acid amplification test), antigen detection tests, viral isolation and testing, serological testing etc. WHO recommends using NAAT modality that can be perfomed using RT-PCR technology. This method is prefered over any other method for accurate detection of zika virus because of high virus-specificity and capacity to confirm infection.

Moreover, majority of the test kits that are currently comercially available for zika virus detection are PCR based only. Also, the Public Health Agency of Canada has recommended that PCR based testing should be adopted for zika virus testing as it is more effective than other exisiting testing methods. Although serological testing can be performed, it is not prefered for zika virus detection.
