UAE COVID Home Test Kits Market Growth and Trends

The rising adoption of self-help and do-it-yourself (DIY) test kits due to convenience and rapid results is a significant factor driving the market of home test kits. An increase in the disease rate and several deaths due to COVID is expected to drive the UAE COVID Home Test Kits market.

The convenience and rapid results will drive the market growth

LooK SPOT AI COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test is one of the leading kits available in the market. It is used to deliver real-time test results within 5 to 8 minutes with 97.4% sensitivity and 98.3% specificity in detecting the SARS-CoV-2 virus with the use of Artificial Intelligence technology. It uses the nasal sample collected from the nostril. LooK SPOT COVID-19 Antigen Rapid Test can also detect the new variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which was identified first in the United Kingdom and South Africa.

LooK SPOT's AI Algorithm has very high accuracy. It can identify the color signal on tests in low positive cases when human eyes cannot eliminate the human error and manual process done with other Antigen tests available in the market. LooK SPOT reduces load by providing accurate test results in an easy-to-read format. From public health view, self-tests can offer advantages when complementing professionally administered RADTs or RT-PCR tests. It helps to improve the accessibility to testing and it also allows individuals to obtain the result very quickly, supporting the early detection of infectious cases and reducing further community transmission.

An increase in the disease rate and number of deaths due to COVID is driving the market growth

COVID or coronavirus is a virus that can cause illnesses such as the common cold, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and the Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS). In 2019, a new coronavirus was identified as the cause of a disease outbreak that originated in China. Since then, COVID-19 has caused havoc around the world, taking the lives of many people. In March 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the COVID-19 outbreak a pandemic. Since then, the world has faced a shortage of good health care services and diagnoses for this disease. COVID-19 tests can test for current infection or past infection. Two types of viral tests can be used: nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs) and antigen tests. The test results come as early as 24 hours after sample collection, but sometimes it can take a few days depending on how long it takes the sample to reach the laboratory and how many other samples are in the queue to be tested. While the home test kits are much easier to use and are accessible to everyone, it would make it easy for everyone to get tested for COVID-19 in less time.

According to the UAE  National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management number of tests conducted (PCR TESTS ONLY) are 50,773,648 and daily tests 218977. The number of deaths due to COVID in the UAE is 1,686, and recovered cases are 554,589. Globally as of now, there have been 170,812,850 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 3,557,586 deaths, reported to WHO.

The reliability of COVID home test kits will hamper the market

Though the demand for make-at-home COVID-19 tests is much more widely available, the lack of awareness and knowledge on how to use these kits properly, patients and their clinicians should be aware of downsides that could reduce their accuracy as cautioned that in addition to being uncomfortable to do at home and possibly not covered by insurance, such tests may produce an inadequate sample and could be damaged by handling it improperly, which may produce false results. It's also unclear whether any or some of the at-home tests, particularly those detecting viral antigens, are capable of identifying all of the variants that are increasingly circulating the country. Laboratory performed real-time PCR test is considered as the gold standard test, and it is the most sensitive and most accurate test that is done very specifically for COVID-19.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis On UAE COVID Home Test Kits Market

COVID-19 has shown a substantial positive impact on the growth of the COVID home test kits market. During the Covid-19 pandemic, the requirement of rapid Covid-19 home test kits has shown a tremendous increase because of the rising number of covid-19 cases worldwide. Additionally, the outbreak of Covid-19 has set out an opportunity for manufacturers to increase rapid diagnostic test kit supplies to restrict the spread of Covid-19 disease as early as possible. Also, a number of government and private organizations are invested in developing   Covid-19 kits for the treatment of Covid-19 patients. Though the manufacturing companies faced problems during the lockdown times, demand is still rising with the prevalence of the disease.

UAE COVID Home Test Kits Market Segment Analysis

RT-PCR Assay Kits dominated the market

Most commercially available kits rely on the reverse transcription-PCR technique due to its high specificity and sensitivity. RT-PCR can amplify a tiny amount of viral genetic material in a sample and it is considered to be the gold standard for the identification of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. At present, RT-PCR tests for COVID-19 generally use samples collected from the upper respiratory system using swabs. In addition, a few tests have also been done using serum, stool, or ocular secretions. Recently, the Rutgers Clinical Genomics Laboratory developed an RT-PCR assay (TaqPath COVID-19 Combo kit) that uses self-collected saliva samples, which is quicker, less painful than other sample collection methods. It lowers the risks to healthcare providers and may enable higher-volume testing. Countries worldwide have ramped up the production of testing kits and are opening up different avenues for people to get tested. For instance, in the UAE, both Abu Dhabi and Dubai have opened drive-through testing centers.

Three new COVID-19 tests have been approved by Abu Dhabi for use in hospital emergency rooms and urgent care centers in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) capital. It came into light as new cases of the coronavirus surged in the country. The Department of Health (DoH), Abu Dhabi announced the new antigen, reverse-transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP), and saliva tests can offer faster results in emergency settings and enable physicians to make rapid decisions regarding medical treatment.

Nasopharyngeal swabs (NP) is expected to dominate the market

For initial diagnostic testing for current SARS-CoV-2 infections, CDC recommends collecting and testing an upper respiratory specimen. Apart from being the standard testing method for the diagnosis of COVID-19, the nasopharyngeal swab is also used frequently for the detection of various viruses and bacterial infections.

The SARS-CoV-2 detection rate was significantly higher for NPS [46.7% (56/120)] than OPS [10.0% (12/120)] (P < 0.001). The sensitivity of NPS was also significantly higher than that of OPS (P < 0.001). At the time of sampling, the time of detectable SARS-CoV-2 had a longer median duration (25.0 vs. 20.5 days, respectively) and longer maximum duration (41 vs. 39 days, respectively) in NPS than OPS.

The laboratories segment will dominate the market in the forecast period

The CDC 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase (RT)–PCR Diagnostic Panel detects the SARS-CoV-2 virus in upper and lower respiratory specimens. It is designed to be used with an existing RT-PCR testing instrument commonly used to test for seasonal influenza virus. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) gave Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for this test on February 4, 2020. The diagnostic panel's FDA-authorized Instructions for about the test, its intended use, the test procedure, and performance characteristics. The EUA published the FDA Letter of Authorization for the diagnostic panel. The letter defines the authorized use and the conditions of an authorization that apply to CDC and to testing laboratories that use this test.

Until last year, the RT-PCR test was not widely known. But ever since the pandemic began, the RT-PCR (real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction) test for COVID-19 has become common.

The screening is conducted via a nasal swab, and the laboratory test is a real-time assessment to detect SARS-CoV-2 genetic material or RNA from a person's upper and lower respiratory specimens. The technique combines reverse transcription of the RNA genetic material from the nasopharyngeal sample into DNA and amplifies these DNA targets using PCR. This amplification helps to measure the amount of a specific virus RNA in the sample. In the case of COVID-19, the RNA which is being detected pertains to the novel coronavirus — SARS-CoV-2.

The RT-PCR test remains the standard one, though there are other ways to test for COVID-19 and UAE has been one of the top-most countries in deploying them to screen for COVID-19. They quickly set up multiple drive-through screening centers across the country, all of which offered RT-PCR tests. The tests were also made available at healthcare facilities, and teams of healthcare professionals went door-to-door in Abu Dhabi and certain parts of Dubai, screening residents for COVID-19.
