Global Plastic Rope Market is Segmented By Product (Twisted Rope, Braided Rope), By Material (Polypropylene, Nylon, HMPE, PET, Specialty fibers, Others), By Application (Marine & Fishing, Sports & Leisure, Electricity Boards, Logistics, Industrial, Household, Safety & Rescue, Others), By Region (North America, Latin America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa) – Share, Size, Outlook, and Opportunity Analysis, 2024-2031

Plastic Rope Market Overview

The Global Plastic Rope Market is expected to reach at a high CAGR during the forecast period 2024-2031.

Plastic ropes have small elongation and good shock resistance. Due to their good water repellent properties are used in water and stored without fear of rotting. The plastic ropes are not affected by any chemicals. The ropes have a wide range of applications in ports & shipbuilding yards, transport, electricity boards, defense, industrial & other sectors. The demand for plastic rope alters according to the application and size of the rope. The current need for plastic ropes is mainly from marine fishing industries for fish netting and construction.

Ropes are only made with various materials ( polypropylene, nylon, polyester, PET, HMPE etc.), but any given rope can have multiple styles of braid or twist. The twisted rope appears in a spiral and is created by twisting at least three strands of yarn in alternate directions. The alternation prevents the rope from unwinding while making it easy to splice. Because of their manufacturing speed, twisted ropes are less expensive. Braided ropes take on a rounded form and are typically smooth. Th4 feature allows them to be utilized in high-friction situations like winches and pulleys.

Plastic Rope Market Dynamics

The global plastic rope market is expected to boost with rising demand for the use of bioplastics to reduce environmental impacts on water bodies.

Rising demand for the use of bioplastics to reduce environmental impacts on water bodies

Plastic collection in the marine environment is a rapidly growing global environmental issue. According to new research, the hauling of rope on maritime vessels could result in billions of microplastic fragments entering the ocean every year. Every year, about 360 million tons of plastic are produced, with an estimated 8 million tons entering the world's oceans. New and one-year-old synthetic ropes can emit roughly 20 microplastic bits for every yard dragged in the water and that number rises exponentially with older equipment. Ropes that are two years old emit 720 fragments per yard, whereas tethers that are ten years old can shed 760 units per yard. According to the survey, fishing vessels consume roughly 220 yards of the rope during an average haul. Through sustainable fishing practices, fisheries can cut fossil fuel use and curb adverse environmental impacts.

Various countries are currently working to fight against the crisis. BIOGEARS is a project funded by the European Union on behalf of the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund that develops biobased gear solutions to develop an eco-friendly offshore aquaculture sector using a multitrophic approach and new biobased value chains. The project aims to supply the aquaculture sector with innovative products to challenge the existing gap of biobased ropes for offshore aquaculture manufactured with 100% non-recyclable plastics. BIOGEARS will promote an eco-friendly aquaculture industry with the project results forming a biobased value chain under the EU Bioeconomy Strategy framework.

Rising use of natural fiber-based ropes

Common natural fibers are available for manufacturing ropes, including Manila hemp, linen, cotton, coir, jute, straw and sisal. Nylon and polypropylene are among the major sources of polluting the environment, due to which natural fiber-based ropes are preferred for various applications.

The natural strength coupled with the all-around utility of manila rope has made it the standard for quality rope. Manila rope consists of all-natural hemp fibers. It creates aesthetic appeal typically used for decorative fences or other landscaping purposes. Manila rope has been used for rigging sails, mooring and anchor ropes because of its durability and strength.

COVID-19 Impact Analysis on Plastic Rope Market

The global plastic ropes market was disrupted in the initial months of 2020 due to COVID-19. The ropes are widely utilized in the fishing industry, which has seen a decline during COVID. The U.S fishing sector revenues declined each month from a 19% decrease in March to a 45% decrease by July. Moreover, COVID-19-driven demand and logistical challenges have developed resin supply shortages, pushing prices up for plastics manufacturers used in manufacturing plastic ropes. In January 2021, U.S polypropylene prices increased from 13.5 to 96.5 cents per pound due to production shortages and exports to Latin America.

Plastic Rope Market Segmentation Analysis

The global plastic rope market is segmented based on material, product, application and region.

The versatility, strength, cost and color of polypropylene ropes have boosted their market demand

Based on material, the global plastic rope market is segmented into polypropylene, nylon, HMPE, PET, specialty fibers and others.

Polypropylene ropes are synthetic and possess various unique qualities. Polypropylene rope is particularly fitted for use around water and will not rot due to water and is resistant to mildew. Polypropylene ropes are widely used for their versatility, strength, cost and color. Polypropylene is a hardy polymer immune to many types of glue and solvents.

The rope is woven from three-strand yarn, making it exceptionally strong and durable. Polypropylene ropes also have a higher melting point than other common polymers, making them resistant to heat and friction. The ropes are mainly used in water sports, gardens, cynology, boating and yachting. Climbing and safety nets are constructed from PP ropes. The rope is also produced in various colors, making it a usual choice for barriers at golf courses, parks and power plants. Because polypropylene floats, it is utilized to designate swimming lanes in pools. Commercial fishermen commonly use the rope, particularly in crab and lobster lines.

The PE rope offers Good chemical resistance to acids, oils, organic solvents, alkalis and alcohols. Animal sweat does not affect their superior strength properties and color stability.

Global Plastic Rope Market Geographical Share

Rising initiatives and projects taken by the European governments on reducing environmental impacts from conventional plastic will impact the market

The region utilizes plastic ropes in various applications, including ports & shipbuilding yards, transport, electricity boards, defense, industrial & other sectors. The fishing industry in the region is the fourth largest globally, providing 6.4 million tons of fish each year and more than 350,000 jobs. The common fisheries policy (CFP) of the EU aims at environmentally and socially sustainable use of the common resource, including aquaculture production. Various governments initiatives are currently working on manufacturing more sustainable plastic rope for multiple applications. Under the Green Deal for Fishing in Support of a Clean Sea, there is significant effort to research alternatives to dolly ropes.

In 2017, Phase 5 of the Dolly Rope Free project was finalized and followed by a testing phase of alternative materials (i.e., biodegradable rope, polyethylene ropes, etc.). The strict regulations and rising concerns have sifted consumers and companies to shift towards sustainable solutions. For instance, in 2020, Marlow Ropes launched bio-based Dyneema to their rope ranges. The product is ISCC certified as sustainable and renewable via "mass-balancing.
