Competitive rivalry intensifies with Bollore Inc, Polinas, Uflex Ltd and others operating in the market.
Metalized films are polymer films coated with a thin layer of metal, usually aluminum. They offer the glossy metallic appearance of aluminum foil at a reduced weight and cost. Metalized films are widely used for decorative purposes and food packaging, and also for specialty applications including insulation and electronics. Metallization is performed using a physical vapor deposition process. Aluminum is the most common metal used for deposition, but other metals such as nickel or chromium are also used. The metal is heated and evaporated under a vacuum. This condenses on the cold polymer film, which is unwound near the metal vapor source.

Metallized Film Market Dynamics and Trends
Rising demand for customer-friendly packaging and Increasing demand for a longer shelf life of food products are the major driving factors for the growth of the market. Metalized films are used as a susceptor for cooking in microwave ovens. An example is a microwave popcorn bag. Many food items are also packaged using metalized films for appearance only, as these produce a package with greater sparkle when compared to competing for products that use printed paper or polymer films. Companies are launching new products in the market. For instance, in August 2018, Cosmo Films introduced a cast polypropylene (CPP) metalized film with high metal bond strength. This film has been specially designed to offer superior interlayer bond strength for making multi-layer laminate structures, which in turn enhances barrier properties.
However, stringent regulations in different economies on automotive films are the key restraint hindering the growth of the market.
Metallized Film Market Segmentation Analysis
By end-use industry, the metalized film market is segmented into packaging, healthcare, electronics, food & beverage, decorative, and others. Others include aerospace, insulation, and construction. The packaging industry is expected to hold a major market share in the forecast period. Both metalized PET and PP have replaced foil laminates for products such as snack foods, coffee, and candy, which do not require the superior barrier of aluminum foil. Metalized nylon and polyethylene are used in the meat export market. The controlled permeation extends shelf life. Companies are focusing to expand their portfolios. For instance, in September 2018, Toray Plastics (America) Inc. expanded its portfolio of white films and now offers consumer product goods (CPG) companies and converters five new Torayfan white-pigmented, metalized biaxially-oriented polypropylene (BOPP) films.
Based on the material used, the market is divided into nylon, polyimide, polyethylene terephthalate, polyethylene, polypropylene, polycarbonate, and others. Others include thermoplastic polyurethane.
Global Metallized Film Market Geographical Share
Solid development can be seen in metalized film market in India and China from the Asia Pacific region. Growth in the buying power from consumers and increasing interest in metalized films from the different end-use industries particularly from decorative and packaging segments are the crucial factors for the market growth. Manufacturers are launching new products from the Asia Pacific region. For instance, in March 2019, the Uflex film division showcased new products for flexible packaging. It is showing one product in two variants, which is a high-barrier metalized BOPP film.
