The first HUD designs were created during World War II to help pilots who had trouble finding their targets in hostile skies while depending only on verbal orders. Pilots couldn't access information without using their hands until head-up displays (HUDs) were created; these HUDs would have been powered by traditional cathode tube technology. To allow drivers to read the information while keeping their eyes on the road, a head-up display (HUD) superimposes graphics onto the inside of the windshield.

HUDs are also incorporated into helmets and goggles. Heads-up displays, first utilized in military aircraft to show avionics, instrument readings, and gunsights in front of the pilot, subsequently made their way to commercial airplanes and cars. Vehicle speed and objects identified by a collision avoidance system, like a deer crossing the road in front, are displayed by passenger car systems.

Head-up Display Market Dynamics and Trends

Over the forecast period, rising safety consciousness and growing automotive production & developments such as connected vehicles and autonomous automobiles are likely to boost head-up display adoption and demand. However, the lack of space in the automotive cockpit may reduce the installation of head-up displays, hampering its growth.

The increased concern for vehicle and passenger safety

Road safety is a prioritized health concern across the world. More than 1.35 million people worldwide were killed each year in fatalities from road crashes in 2017. Additionally, up to 50 million people sustain injuries. Road traffic accidents are the eighth-leading cause of mortality overall. Human error was a significant factor contributing to 94% of the crashes.

Drivers are exposed to an increasing amount of visual and audio information through the use of in-car and brought-in devices such as navigation aids and smartphones while operating a vehicle. It is becoming more widely acknowledged that driver distraction is a significant contributor to injuries and fatalities on the road. As a result, global safety awareness is projected to drive demand for head-up displays in automobiles. Luxury automobiles will have advanced AR-based head-up displays, while passenger cars will likely have traditional head-up displays.

The growing demand for electrified and semi-autonomous vehicles

There has been a considerable global demand for semi-autonomous and electric automobiles in recent years. According to the IEA, people are spending US$ 120 billion on electric car buyers in 2020, up 50% from 2019. It represents an increase in sales of 41% and average pricing of 6%. Governments across the world spent US$ 14 billion on direct purchase incentives and tax deductions for electric cars in 2020, a 25% rise year on year.

The cars are largely utilized to provide drivers with increased safety and convenience. Park assistance, front collision avoidance, and advanced cruise control are among the advanced features of semi-autonomous vehicles. The parts are displayed on windshields in drivers' sightlines in semi-autonomous vehicles with head-up displays.

Complex setup and lack of space

By displaying pertinent information such as speed, RPM, oil level, warnings, etc., vehicle dashboards play a crucial part in ensuring that driving is safe and easy. However, when more and more information is displayed on numerous car screens, it can occasionally be difficult to read or overwhelm important information. Additionally, it might be hazardous to glance between the dashboard and the road, particularly when drivers need to concentrate and keep their heads up.

The setup of the head-up display is complex and occupies lots of space (typically 7-10 liters) from the dashboard. It requires a special windshield/coating and the viewing angles are limited. Images become fuzzy because the display's projector trembles while the car moves. They are inappropriate for buses, RVs, trucks, or vans since they do not function for vertical windows and windshields.

COVID-19 Impact on Head-up Display Market Growth

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely hit the growing head-up display industry. There is an obstacle in the supply of the parts necessary to create head-up displays. Almost all major automakers have acknowledged the extraordinary challenge, expected to last at least another year, and are making the necessary adjustments to their plans. For instance, it's claimed that BMW in Germany may decide to drop head-up displays from a few of its add-on package choices.

Head-up Display Market Segment and Shares Analysis

By application, the head-up display market is segmented into aviation and automotive.

Escalating the use of head-up displays in vehicles

Digitalization is a significant breakthrough in the auto industry. The automotive sector is changing thanks to digital technology, which is also upending established business models. Businesses must adjust to the new environment as new business prospects related to Industry 4.0 emerge. A few new technologies are on the horizon for head-up displays.

Information is now presented in 2D fixed orientation at a fixed distance using traditional head-up displays. A driver can project information onto the road with a head-up display, which increases safety by enhancing driver-vehicle communication. As a result, introducing new car models incorporating HUD is anticipated to spur market expansion.

Head-up Display Market Geographical Analysis

Europe has a sizable number of market participants
