Enzymes Market Dynamics and Trends

The market is driven by increasing demand for enzymes in the food and beverage, biofuel, animal feed, and home cleaning industries. The growing application of enzymes in protein engineering technology shall stimulate market growth. Protein engineering involves the discovery and production of newer types of enzymes to catalyze reactions that do not occur naturally. The enzymes are widely used across various applications such as food processing, pre-digestion of baby foods, germination in breweries, fruit juice clarification, cheese manufacturing, meat tenderization, and conversion of starch into glucose.

The market is witnessing the launch of novel enzymes. For instance, in June 2020, DuPont Nutrition & Biosciences had launched the SPEZYME HN, the latest in the Spezyme line of alpha-amylase enzymes and a new inclusion in the business suite of Xcelis Ethanol Solutions. The Spezyme HN blend combines an alpha-amylase with a thermostable phytase – that means delivering industry-leading liquefaction for dry-grind ethanol plants operating under harsh conditions.

In May 2020, AB Enzymes had launched the Rohapect Mc, the next-generation classical pectinase enzyme for berries and other fruits. Rohapect Mc is suitable for berry processing and it is universally suitable for the mash and juice treatment of various fruits. The Rohapect Mc comprised of the optimal composition of carefully selected pectolytic enzyme activities. This classical pectinase enzyme provides quick and reliable pectin degradation leading to fast viscosity reduction and high juice and anthocyanin extraction as well as fast clarification and excellent juice ultrafiltration. The result is a smooth process that yields juices and juice concentrates of the highest nutritional value.

Several companies are focusing on the expansion of the enzyme production facilities. For instance, in February 2019, Hayashibara Co., Ltd., a NAGASE Group company had begun construction of a new facility to produce Pullulan and various enzymes at Okayama Plant II. Pullulan is a natural polysaccharide that is fermented by yeast from starch. Pullulan’s adhesiveness, thickening, film-forming, formability, and other properties are mainly used in a wide range of applications such as food adhesives, thickeners, quality improvement, and capsule manufacture.

In November 2016, Novozymes had built a new enzyme production and supply chain facility in India to accommodate its growing business in the country. The initial investment of around 300 million Danish kroner would be spent on the site in the Patalganga industrial area near Mumbai on India’s west coast. The new plant would produce enzymes using solid-state fermentation, also formulating enzymes imported from Novozymes’ production sites outside India. In April 2014, Royal DSM had put its food specialties world-class enzyme facility in Yixing, Jiangsu province into operation. The facility would serve both global and local markets, laying a foundation for the development of the DSM enzyme business in China. The facility covers an area of 4,000 square meters.

Enzymes Market Segmentation Analysis

The enzymes market is segmented based on the product type as carbohydrases, proteases, lipases, polymerases & nucleases, and other enzymes. The carbohydrases segment accounts for the highest market share due to increasing usage of the carbohydrases in the textiles & leather, food & beverages, pulp & paper, and biofuel. The carbohydrases are the group of enzymes that promote the hydrolysis or synthesis of carbohydrates into sugar such as glucose and fructose. Carbohydrases are used for the production of corn syrup, ethanol, baking, and brewing. Carbohydrates are used in the beverage and pharmaceutical industries. Carbohydrases are useful for the production of prebiotic products and artificial sweeteners for wines and juices. There are different types of carbohydrates such as amylase, cellulase, and other carbohydrates. The amylases catalyze the hydrolysis of starch into the sugars. The amylases are classified into alpha, beta, and gamma depending on the way they attack the bonds of the starch molecules. Alpha-amylases are widespread among living organisms. Beta-amylases are present in the yeasts, molds, bacteria, and plants. The beta-amylases are used for the removal of the starchy sizing agents from textiles, and conversion of the cereal grains to fermentable sugars. Gamma-amylases have the efficiency of cleaving certain types of glycosidic linkages in the acidic environment.

Further, the enzymes market is also classified based on the source as the plants, animals, and microorganisms. The microorganisms segment accounts for the highest market share of XX% in 2019. The enzymes sourced from the microorganisms are used in various industries such as chemical, fermentation, agricultural, pharmaceuticals, and food production. Bacterial enzymes are obtained from the Bacillus. Bacterial enzymes are widely used in the food, pharmaceutical, and detergent industries. There is increasing usage of the fungi-based enzymes for the preparation and production of several products such as soy sauce, beer, baked goods, processed fruits, and dairy items. Enzymes such as amylase, protease, cellulase, lipase, and lactase are obtained from the fungi. Some mushroom species produce enzymes such as hydrolases, esterases, and phenol oxidases.

The plant segment is expected to witness positive market growth over the forecasted period. Several enzymes such as amylase, protease, cellulase, and lipase are obtained from plant sources. The plant-based enzymes are suitable for supporting digestive health. Fruits and vegetables are the ideal sources of enzymes.

Enzymes Market Geographical Share

By region, the enzymes market is segmented into North America, South America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, Middle-East, and Africa. Among all of the regions, North America dominated the enzymes market due to the high usage of enzymes in several industries. There is a growing development of novel and superior performing products involving the usage of enzymes. The high consumption of functional foods involving the use of enzymes for reducing the risk of disease development shall stimulate market growth. Several enzymes such as protease, lipase, amylase, and cellulose are used in functional foods for enhancing their functional attributes such as improvement in digestion, anti-oxidation, decreased cell aging, and nutrient properties. The growing technological advancement for the increasing usage of enzymes for various applications shall stimulate market growth.

Asia-Pacific region is expected to have positive market growth over the forecasted period owing to rapid industrialization. There is growing usage of enzymes in pharmaceuticals, food and beverages, animal feed, biofuels, pulp & paper industry, and other industries. There is increasing usage of enzymes for the production of detergents with superior properties such as removal of stains and the ability to be used at low temperatures. The enzymes are used for the development of animal feed products with digestibility and enhanced nutritional value. There is growing awareness regarding enzyme-based pharmaceuticals and protein therapies, and food and beverages.
